Siena International Photo Award is one of the photo contests with the highest international participation. The 2018 edition has received nearly 48.000 images from amateur and professional photographers from 156 countries worldwide.
It is split between several categories such as Journeys & Adventures, Fascinating faces and characters, Still Life and others. We will focus on the two categories that interest us the most The Beauty of the Nature and Animals in their Environment which we covered in another article.
Because it is always good to have a reminder of what we are fighting to protect, and because photography has the power to inspire people here are our favourite photos from the following category :
The Beauty of the Nature
1st prize – El Calbuco
The winner of the category is Fransisco Negro who took this incredible picture .This photograph was taken during a violent night eruption of the Calbuco volcano in the Lagos region, Chile. An incredible dirt storm wraps the fumarole of the erupting volcano.
2nd Prize – Migration
In the desert of Dahana, in the center of Saudi Arabia, Bedouins migrate with camels from place to place, searching for food and water. Khalid Alsabt took this picture while a group of nomads was passing him with their camels, creating beautiful shadows in a peaceful atmosphere.
3rd Prize – Travellers
A group of Chinstrap Penguins (Pygoscelis Antarctica) is resting on an iceberg in the Bransfield Strait. When sailing Antarctic waters you will often see different types of icebergs. Some of these floating islands are great resting places for hunting penguins who can travel many kilometers, before jumping back into the icy water.
The stunning 180º panorama, with the milky way in the background, magnifies a field of Paepalanthus wildflowers in the Brazilian National Park of Veadeiros Tablelands.
The Great Eclipse
This photo was taken during the total solar eclipse that happened in the USA in August 2017. It is the result of HDR stacking from 14 images.
Layers of Antarctica
Coming from the ship you see in the background, photographer Vladimir Alekseev had this to say about his picture “Despite the very bad weather conditions, I was able to photograph this small colony of Adélie Penguins still living in their native habitat on Yalour Islands. Due to climate changes, most of Adélie Penguins have migrated to the south, deep into the continent.”
Under the Moonlight
Inverno del Giardino Degli Dei
